Ambetter
Centene was founded in 1984 as a nonprofit Medicaid plan by a former hospital bookkeeper, Elizabeth “Betty” Brinn. The business, operated in the basement of Family Hospital in Milwaukee, built its guiding principles on Brinn’s experiences growing up in a Milwaukee County orphanage.
Molina
It was in 1980 when as an emergency room physician, C. David Molina, MD, noticed that low-income, uninsured or non-English speaking patients were coming to the emergency room in need of general health care services. Without family doctors, they were not always getting the right care and information. These underserved families deserved better and Dr. Molina set out to do something about it.
Cigna
Cigna was formed in 1982 by the merger of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) and the Insurance Company of North America (INA). INA was the first stock insurance company in America and was founded in 1792. INA is considered to be the ancestor of Cigna. CG was created in 1865 by a special act of the Governor of Connecticut. In the late 1990’s Cigna had one of the largest international networks in the traditional insurance market. However, the company sold its property and casualty business to ACE Insurance in order to concentrate on its core business.
United Health Care
United Healthcare is one of the largest health insurance companies in the country. Created from the evolution of Charter Med, it was the first company to offer network-based healthcare plans for seniors in 1979. In 1984, the company changed from private ownership to a publicly-traded corporation.
Humana
Humana embarked on its journey in 1961, then known by the name of ‘EXTENDICARE’ – a nursing home company. Dismantled in 1972, it invested in purchasing new hospitals, becoming one of the largest hospital companies in the U.S. Extendicare got its new corporate identity Humana Inc. in 1974. Facing exceptional growth, Humana took over control of American Medicorp Inc in 1978, doubling the size of the company. Accelerating the construction process, the company could complete and open a new hospital in just one month.
Oscar
Oscar's story begins, fittingly, in a hospital room. In 2012, Oscar CEO Mario Schlosser and his wife were going through their first pregnancy in New York. Confronted with a maze of insurance jargon and no practical way to identify the best obstetrician, their first meaningful experience with the health care system put them at a loss as to how to navigate care or hold anyone accountable. Mario’s friend Josh Kushner had recently had his own frustrating encounter following what should’ve been a routine treatment for an injury. Mario and Josh knew that their experiences were reflective of a larger problem in health care: consumers were powerless. That spring, they founded Oscar Health.btitle
